The Gettysburg Garden Club is set to plant over 8,000 daffodil bulbs in Lincoln Square on Thursday, preparing for a vibrant spring display.
The club, which has been beautifying Gettysburg for 65 years, traditionally plants annuals in mid-May and removes them in the fall. This year, they are replacing tulip bulbs with daffodils, which are expected to bloom next spring.
“We were very wet and then we were very dry and then we were cool and then we were very hot and very dry,” said Patricia Thorsen, president of the Gettysburg Garden Club, describing the challenging gardening season.
The Gettysburg Garden Club is also responsible for maintaining hanging planters and flowers at the fire hall. They plan to extend their efforts to the new welcome center once it opens.

The Gettysburg Garden Club awarded its May Garden of the Month award to Sharon Graff, 70 E. Stevens St., Gettysburg.
As the days start to get longer, and the cold and gloom of winter are replaced by the warm sunshine of spring, Graff’s gardens are bursting with life. The backyard of this well-maintained 1895 Victorian house is rimmed with perennial flower beds and bulbs.
The springtime show starts with daffodils and tulips in April, followed by blooming irises, Knock Out roses, and peonies in May, which eventually give way to Stella D’oro daylilies, Oriental lilies, and a variety of hostas in June.
